Today, having set foot in over 70 countries and providing karate instruction to millions, Morio Higaonna Sensei resides in Okinawa, not far from the home of Goju Ryu founder Chojun Miyagi Bushi. Like his teacher before him, because of his great natural talent and fierce determination, he progressed very rapidly. ![]() He began his Karate training in Shuri-te and at the age of 14 was introduced to Kanryo Higaonna with whom he began his study of Naha-te. May 2013 saw further recognition of the Goju Ryu Masters' life work, when Morio Higaonna Sensei received an award from the Okinawan government listing him as an Intangible Cultural Treasure. Chojun Miyagi (1888 - 1953) Chojun Miyagi was born on April 25,1888. By 1979 Morio Higaonna had a worldwide following.Īnichi Miyagi Sensei passed away in September 2009, however, before his death he presented Morio Higaonna Sensei his own personal black belt and his 10th Dan certificate. Morio Higaonna was devoted to trying to win the respect and teachings of Anichi Miyagi Sensei and he trained at the dojo six days per week, on Sundays at his own home. In April 1955, at the age of 16, he officially entered the famous garden dojo of Chojun Miyagi. Morio Higaonna was born on December 25th, 1938.Īt the age of 14, he began training martial arts with his father who was a Shorin-ryu Karate practitioner. "Do not be struck by others, do not strike others, the principle is the peace without incident." His last teaching before his passing in 1953 reads: His promotional work to spread Goju-ryu was so successful, that the Japanese Butokukai recognised his style as an official martial art and he as it's official master. In 1926 Chojun Miyagi founded the Karate Kenkyu Club, bringing together the top Masters of the main styles of Karate to unite under the common goal of spreading true karate to future generations. He became the only student to learn all the Naha-te Kata from Kanryo Sensei, who passed away in 1915. Every day Chojun Miyagi would bring Sensei Kanryo to his own home to care for him and learn from him. Chojun Miyagi desperately wanted to learn the rest of the Naha-te style from his teacher and also care for him in his later years. After his discharge two years later, he rushed back home to Okinawa upon hearing that his teacher's health had deteriorated. In 1914 World War I swept across the globe and Chojun Miyagi was called upon for national service at the age of twenty six. Training took place at Sensei Kanryo's home each evening and after the usual two hour session, Sensei Kanryo would keep Chojun Miyagi behind for personal one on one instruction Kanryo Sensei observed this and eventually Chojun Miyagi became the student he chose to learn the entire art of Naha-te.Īt the time, students were only taught Sanchin and one other Kata. The Naha-te training he received was very intense and brutal, but he persisted and did extra training to strengthen his body and aid in fast improvement.
